Digital

Ville française majeure de la tech et de l’IoT, Toulouse est le lieu où les savoir-faire dans l’aéronautique, le spatial et le numérique se nourrissent mutuellement pour créer les technologies émergentes de demain.

Digital technology in Toulouse

As France’s second-largest digital hub, Toulouse connects talent, innovation and major corporations in an agile and rapidly growing ecosystem. Artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, IoT, big data: here, digital technology is at the service of industry. The sector represents 56,000 jobs spread across 4,000 companies. We also have 900 start-ups and more than 20,000 students in tech.

Startups and Innovation:
breeding ground for growth

A group of stakeholders structures and supports the 900 or so digital startups that are registered in the metropolitan area:

  • French Tech Toulouse: The metropolitan area has been designated French Tech Capital since 2014 and brings together all the major players in the local tech ecosystem.
  • Data Valley is a unique ecosystem in Europe dedicated to the Internet of Things, housed in a 20,000 m² building that includes a coworking space, an incubator and an accelerator. It is a space that responds to new ways of working by offering companies an ideal environment in which to create and develop.
  • Le Village by CA, Nubbo, and AT Home are other regional support networks.

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial & Natural Intelligence Toulouse Institute

The Toulouse AI cluster is led by ANITI (Artificial & Natural Intelligence Toulouse Institute) and focuses on high-performance, trustworthy artificial intelligence. ANITI aims to tackle the scientific, technical and human challenges associated with the integration and use of AI by promoting the emergence of a new generation of researchers and engineers.

The cluster aims to bring together and coordinate all AI-related activities carried out with the site’s academic partners in research, training and innovation. Bringing together 16 research laboratories, 7 universities and engineering schools, and more than 30 industrial partners, ANITI works closely with local institutions, the Saint Exupéry Institute of Technological Research, digital clusters and competitiveness clusters.

Towards new areas of application for AI

In addition to mobility, transport and robotics/cobotics for the industry of the future, ANITI will expand its areas of application to the environment, with the aim of using trusted AI in climate prediction and extreme event management, thereby strengthening Toulouse’s leadership in this sector.

Cybersecurity

The last twenty years have seen a surge in cyber attacks targeting individuals, businesses, local authorities and public institutions, resulting in high costs. Cybersecurity has become a priority issue, with the aim of making the region one of the leaders in this sector in France and Europe by strengthening research, developing training programmes and promoting scientific advances to support players in the industry.
Cybersecurity in Toulouse represents more than 200 companies and over 3,000 jobs, including major players in the sector such as Airbus Protect, Thalès, Orange Cyber Defence and many others. The region is also home to numerous SOCs (Security Operations Centres) belonging to large companies, a cluster that brings together the regional ecosystem (Cyber’Occ) and the Institut Cybersécurité Occitanie (ICO), which brings together academic players. This rich environment stimulates research, enables the development of training and promotes collaboration while promoting scientific advances. As for the CBC, Cybersecurity Business Convention, it is the region’s leading event in the sector.

IoT and electronics

Thanks to its long-standing industrial specialisation in the fields of aeronautics, electronics and embedded systems, Toulouse has unique expertise, skills and capabilities in several areas closely related to the IoT, such as signal processing, sensors and electronic components. In addition, the presence in the region of specialised suppliers (Sierra Wireless, PTC) and major manufacturers interested in IoT, whether to enhance their products with new connectivity features or to optimise their production processes (Enedis, Airbus), has enabled new entrants to forge partnerships with established players in order to test and refine their solutions.
Today, the IoT comprises around a hundred companies, from start-ups to large groups, which are revolutionising multiple sectors such as logistics, mobility, the environment and industry.

Industry of the future

In Toulouse, industry, driven by aeronautics, space, automotive and healthcare, is the largest employer. To remain competitive in a demanding global environment, players are constantly seeking to optimise their processes. More than 150 companies – start-ups, SMEs, mid-cap companies and large groups – already offer products, services and solutions for the Industry of the Future.
In terms of training, the MFJA welcomes 1,200 students in mechanical, production and aeronautical engineering. Its modern facilities, adapted to Industry 4.0 (additive manufacturing, virtual reality, robotics, etc.), meet the needs of businesses while incorporating the latest educational innovations.
